More than 180 athletes gathered in Ketchum, ID at the Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival to race Round 3 of the SCOTT Enduro Cup presented by Vittoria. Day 1 of the two-day race featured cool morning temperatures with sunny skies. Riders embarked on three timed stages located on the steep slopes of Sun Valley Resort. At the end of the day, Cody Kelly, 23, of Salt Lake City and Cooper Ott, 25, of Crested Butte, CO, completed the three-stage course in the least amount of time, putting them in first place for Pro/Open Men and Women.
The annual Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival is a celebration of life on two wheels. Visitors can participate or spectate in one of the many fast-paced races—or kick-back, saddle up and enjoy the summertime recreational offerings of iconic Sun Valley, ID. The four-day festival is host to endurance, skill and learning based events centralized around all things cycling including the SCOTT Enduro Cup presented by Vittoria.
The day’s three stages tested the rider’s endurance and skill with loose rocky terrain and 6,345 vertical descending-feet. The race began with a short pedal out of the Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival Expo, in Ketchum, to the River Run Base Area, at Sun Valley Resort. From there, riders continued up the gondola transfer to the start of Stage 1. Stage 1 took them down the Bald Mountain Trail from the Summit to the Traverse Trail.
On the second stage riders charged down the Traverse Trail from Bald Mountain Trail to the Lower Warm Springs. After ascending the gondola for a second time, Stage 3 treated riders to a new stage on the Cold Springs Trail.
Kelly and Ott rode away with the fastest times today, but tomorrow’s rugged backcountry stages will test the rider’s in a different way. Riders begin racing from the Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival Expo tomorrow, July 2, at 7:30 a.m.
